Applying & Interviewing

Let Us Know You’re Interested

You can approach the starting line of your career path at Macy’s, Inc. a couple of different ways:

If we’re on your campus...
Our college relations’ managers organize numerous campus recruiting events each year. If our schedule includes your campus, meet us at one of our events and bring your resume to us in person. You can mingle with recruiters, alumni and other Macy’s/Bloomingdale’s representatives to ask questions and see if we would be a good fit for you. To find out when the next recruiting event will be held on your campus, visit our campus events page.

If we’re not on your campus...
You can apply for a specific position directly online with us. To submit your profile and resume online, click on Apply Now from any page on this Web site. You can search for a position on our Web site in several different ways:

  • By job
  • By location
  • By title

Select the job you want to apply for and submit your application by clicking on the “Apply for This Job” link. You may apply to as many programs as you like, but we encourage you to focus on the program and location you believe best matches your skills, interests and long-term career goals.

A resume is beneficial, but not required at this stage. Simply type “No Resume” in the resume box.

Click on the Done button when you have completed all of the information.

Then What Happens?
You’ll receive an on-screen acknowledgement showing that your profile has been successfully submitted. If your skills and experience are a match for an open position, we will contact you to arrange an interview.

Our Interview Process

To help you be better prepared for your Macy’s interviews, here’s an overview of what to expect. In addition, we’re glad to share some advice to help boost your confidence during the interview process:

Campus Interviews
First-round interviews are conducted on campus. Interviews are preceded by an pre-night information session that we encourage you to attend. This session will give you more insight into the day-to-day business of retail and allow you to mingle with executives currently in the jobs you are interviewing for.

Our interviews consist of two 30-minute sessions with two different executives. We use behavioral-based questions that will focus on your accomplishments, goals and interests. You also will be asked to complete an on-line questionnaire as part of the first-round process. Here are a few sample interview questions:

  • Give me an example of a good decision you’ve made recently.
  • What has been your biggest achievement at college? Why?
  • Tell me about a summer job or internship that gave you insight into running a business. What did you learn?

After completing this first-round interview process, you will typically hear from us within two to three weeks.

Macy’s/Bloomingdale’s On-Site Interviews
If you are selected for a second-round interview, you’ll definitely come to visit us at Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s on-site! The second-round process will also include two behavioral-based interviews, each lasting about 45 minutes. Prior to the visit, you will be asked to complete an on-line assessment that will take approximately 45 minutes. During the on-site visit, you will have an opportunity to participate in numerous activities to help us get to know you better and to help you decide if we are the right fit for you.

What to Wear

So you’re planning to interview with a company that’s a fashion leader in retail. How should you dress?

The business world has certainly sent mixed signals in recent years – shifting from corporate suits to business casual to sometimes very casual, depending on the organization.

Good advice for interview dressing is to kick it up a notch, even in business casual environments. The key is to look polished and professional. Here are some guidelines:

WOMEN

  • Solid color, conservative suit (skirt or pants) with coordinated blouse
  • Moderate heeled shoes
  • Limited jewelry
  • Neat, professional hairstyle and manicured nails
  • Light make-up and little or no perfume
  • Portfolio or notebook with your resume and list of questions to ask

MEN

  • Solid color, conservative suit, long-sleeve shirt, conservative tie
  • Professional shoes with dark socks
  • Neat hairstyle and trimmed nails
  • Little or no cologne or aftershave
  • Portfolio or notebook with your resume and list of questions to ask

Professional Interview Tips

Interviewing can be a nerve-wracking process – whether it’s your first interview or your fifteenth.

Being properly prepared can make you much more comfortable and confident. So here’s a brief checklist to help you get ready for the big day.

  1. Do your homework. Research the industry and the company. Find out your interviewer’s name and prepare to use it.
  2. Practice interviewing. Anticipate questions such as: What do you know about the company? What are your career goals? Why should we hire you? Practice your responses using actual examples to describe your skills.
  3. Be on time. Arrive about ten minutes early for your interview. If necessary, take an advance trip to the interview site to know how long it takes to get there.
  4. Use positive body language. Shake the interviewer’s hand firmly. Make frequent eye contact. Smile, be upbeat and make positive statements.
  5. Relax. Try to stay calm and focused. Listen to the entire question before answering. Ask the interviewer to restate or clarify a question if you have any confusion. Take a moment to collect your thoughts before responding.
  6. Ask questions. Come prepared with a written list of your own questions. It’s a great way to show your interviewer that you’ve done your homework and that you want to know more about the job and the industry.
  7. Follow up! Always follow up with a brief (no longer than one page) thank you note. Restate your interest in the position and how your skills meet the company’s needs. If you interview with multiple people, send a note to each. E-mail or mail a note within one to two days of your interview.
