Director, Maintenance" Nobody likes to be micromanaged, so I empower my team to make decisions. I'll give my associates a project and let them know my plan for it but let them manage the job to the end."
You've been recognized for you leadership as a manager. What abilities and skills make you a good leader? How have you made a difference?
I have a strong knowledge of how all the operations work. I'm able to multi-task many different projects and mentor my team to bring them to a higher level. For me, being second is never an option. Under my leadership there have been a number of major improvements, not just in my area, but in all areas of building operations. We've kept expenses under plan and have become more efficient in our daily work.
How do you build your team to provide the best working environment?
Nobody likes to be micromanaged, so I empower my team to make decisions. I'll give my associates a project and let them know my plan for it but let them manage the job to the end.
How does having a strong team foster the best environment for positive relationships with your customers, other Macy's, Inc. divisions?
My associates feel they are a part of a world class team and enjoy their work. They come to work wanting to do their best. Our customers are all internal. We make sure they know that we care greatly about meeting their needs and fulfilling their expectations.
How do you set the example for your team?
I don't ask them to do anything that I wouldn't do myself. I motivate my team to do the best job possible by explaining the benefits of each project they are doing.
In the time you've spent with Logistics, what has been your greatest accomplishment?
A few years ago, we did a conveyer remodel that saved over a half million dollars and helped the building win facility of the year. We did all the work in-house. This was a very large project that other people didn't think could be done. In the end, we completed it on time and on budget and made it the most efficient and cost effective center in Macy's, Inc.
What would you recommend to a new manager joining the company?
Have an open mind. Learn everything you can, not just about the area you work in but about all the areas around you, so you can understand everybody's role. Find somebody who can mentor you and help you navigate the company and your management position.
