Operating Vice President, Furniture and Bedding"I wasn't necessarily looking for a 'corporation with a conscience' but I am certainly glad I wound up with one."
Why did you join Macy's Logistics and Operations and why have you stayed?
I was recruited from college by Macy's into the executive training program, and I moved from sales to sales support. I have stayed because of the changing and challenging work environment. I love that Macy's Logistics and Operations allows me the flexibility to find opportunities for success that match my interests and skills. I have been with Macy's, Inc. for 13 years now and have held 10 different positions of increasing responsibility. I was just recently promoted to my current position as Operating Vice President.
What do you enjoy most about what you do and what are your overall job responsibilities?
I enjoy the diverse and friendly staff and management teams we have and the overall satisfaction of knowing we're working together to meet our store goals. I am responsible for the four wall operations of small ticket logistics. This is a new job for me so I am learning and taking on more responsibility as I go.
What contribution do you make to your division and how do you feel you make a difference?
In my past positions with Macy's Logistics and Operations, I have improved the accuracy of small ticket, I have facilitated fast-track teams to solve problems and implement process improvements and worked on six sigma projects that will save the company more than $1 million. I am part of a team that has great synergy and does big things.
What has been your most memorable moment since joining the company?
Most recently, my most memorable moment was my promotion to Operating Vice President. I think this promotion is in recognition of a lot of hard work and dedication to world-class change and long-term improvements in process. Another great moment for me was when I was working as Operations Manager during the Olympics in Atlanta. Getting ready for three weeks of Olympic Games in Atlanta was an 18-month process for us. All of the renovations and preparations we did was one of the biggest things I have ever done.
How has the training you've received since joining the company benefited you?
Macy's Logistics and Operations does a lot of training both formal and informal. I have been both student and teacher depending on the topic. In addition to the formal training, we also meet regularly via conference calls, video conferencing or in person to share our successes and learn from others' experiences. Learning from each other really makes a difference for us.
Is community involvement important to you, have you been involved in any projects in your division and was this something you considered when joining the company?
It is very important to me. I have run the United Way campaign for a couple of years, and I work with Partners In Time on events that mostly center around children and families in need. Last spring, I made a commitment to be a tutor to a second grade student at a school nearby. I have to say that I appreciate the fact that I work for a corporation and management team that support the community we live in and let me have time off work to help a child in need. I wasn't necessarily looking for a "corporation with a conscience" but I am certainly glad I wound up with one.
What do you like best about your work environment?
The team. We work so well together and make the effort to help each other as needed. Management is friendly and our atmosphere is fun and casual.
What personal interests/hobbies do you have and how do you balance them with your work?
My interests revolve around my family, especially with two small children. I feel lucky to have a boss that understands and supports that sometimes I have to come in late or leave early for school events. Also, if needed I can work from home on projects.
What advice would you give to a new executive joining the company? What helped you establish yourself and move ahead with your career goals?
I would encourage them to extend themselves to people, try new things and spread your wings. I have been successful because of the experienced and knowledgeable people around me and their willingness to share. I have been very lucky in that I have worked for people who believe that they are successful if I am successful.
What do you see in the future for Macy's, Inc. and the department store industry?
I think Macy's, Inc. is leading other retailers with their willingness to make big change. The Six Sigma process is changing our culture top to bottom. We are learning how to embrace and lead positive change. We listen to our customer and employees needs, and our willingness to change and evolve will make this company a leader in our field.
